The Vipava Valley

The Vipava Valley lies in the western part of Slovenia, on the transition from the Friuli lowlands to the central Slovenia. From east to west it is surrounded by the Nanos and Hrušica plateaus as well as the distinctive Trnovo forest; the Vipava Hills in the south separate it from the Kras region.
The valley's peculiarity is a varied relief with its height above sea level spanning from 60m to 1400m. The Ajdovščina and Vipava municipalities cover the majority of the region. The municipalities cover a total area of 350 km² and have approximately 22,500 inhabitants.

An important characteristic of the Vipava Valley is its openness towards west. Due to the influence of the Mediterranean climate coming from this direction the growing season here is two months longer than in central Slovenia. The intertwining of the Mediterranean and continental climates is reflected in the biodiversity of the plant and animal life in the valley. In the lowland of the valley the climate conditions are almost ideal for the growing of fruit and vegetables. The vineyards, which give the famous wine, stretch on the low hills bathing in sunshine. On the high northern plateaus the climate is continental with snow being a regular visitor. Extensive meadows on the Nanos plateau offer a delicious pasture and the intact nature provides a nutritious base for quality milk from which the Vipava Dairy makes its top quality dairy products.

And we can’t forget the well-known Vipava wind Burja. From the Nanos and Gora plateaus this north-eastern wind blows down to the Valley with speeds up to 180 km/h.
